A guitar said to be the favourite of Jimi Hendrix is to be put up for auction in London and has been predicted to command a price of around £120,000.

The vintage Epiphone FT79 was bought by Hendrix in New York for just £15, and reportedly became the choice instrument for the legendary guitarist during the period of the recording of his final album ‘Electric Ladyland‘ in 1968.

The guitar was sold on by Hendrix in 1970, but quickly became the favourite of another legendary musician, David Bowie, who used the instrument on his 1974 concept album ‘Diamond Dogs‘.

“Jimi Hendrix is arguably the greatest guitarist of all time and the sale of this iconic instrument offers a rare opportunity to own an important piece of rock and roll history,” said Head of Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia Stephanie Connel.

Hendrix former girlfriend Kathy Etchingham has also commented on the guitar, saying: “It was used very, very heavily, continuously, all the time. Jimi had music coming out of every pore. One minute he’d be eating his breakfast, the next he’d say ‘hey’ and pick up the guitar and play the riffs in his head.”

The instrument will be sold at Bonhams auctioneers on December 15th.
