Legendary songwriter Bob Dylan has been confirmed as a headliner at next year’s Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia, eight years after he was first reported to be booked for the event.

Dylan will be joined on the impressive bill by Elvis Costello and veteran guitarist BB King at the five day festival which will be held between April 21st-25th 2011.

The festival’s director Peter Noble told ABC News he had first booked Dylan in 2003, but was hit with a late cancellation, and added: “He used to say, ‘Don’t put me in any town I’ve never heard of’, and finally we’ve done it. Although I think he’s heard of Byron now.

Bob Dylan and BB King are rock royalty, and we especially wanted to get Dylan because of the counter-culture and protest music in his early career representing a lot of what Byron Bay was once about. Byron used to be such an anti-establishment hippy town and to get Bob to play here has always been the Holy Grail. Elvis Costello is the icing on the cake of the best line-up we’ve had in years.”

Joining Bob Dylan, BB King and Elvis Costello will be the likes of Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Mavis Staples and Ben Harper, who is set to unleash his new project Fistful Of Mercy, which features George Harrison‘s son Dhani.
