Review: Sensorites – ‘Just Because You Can’

‘Young bands don’t say anything’ was the recent not-at-all generalising remark made by Manic Street Preachers’ Nicky Wire. To be fair, the charge does at least have some base of truth to it, since spending cuts, recessions, banking losses, cats being dropped in wheelie bins and God knows what else the Daily Mail has been getting in a frenzy over hasn’t necessarily stirred to life much social commentary from a platform which has always traditionally looked to provide it’s own views on the issues of the day.

Well one band who certainly are giving the world their take are Sensorites – Merseyside-based brothers Natham and Gareth Kirkham, with their new single ‘Just Because You Can‘ – they might just have perfectly captured the general mood of a large portion of the British public with the song’s simple but inspired refrain ‘Just because you can/doesn’t mean you should’.

On the idea which ties the song together, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Natham says: “‘Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’ this mantra had been resonating inside my head for a while, you only have to turn on the news for a minute to appreciate it. Conceived on Piano with equal measures of optimism and despair in human nature ‘Just Because You Can‘ almost wrote itself.”

That ease of genesis and recording discussed is obvious on the final cut. Sensorites are originally from Stoke-On-Trent but now live on Merseyside
and the relaxed, understated vibe could only be Liverpool, skillfully following the long, successful tradition of catchy, acoustically led melodies their adopted city has so excelled at. Undoubtedly an impressively confident release which points to a bright future for the Kirkham Brothers, their new single proves to Mr. Wire there most certainly are young bands out there with a voice to be heard.

Just Because You Can‘ is released on download and CD on November 15th. Listen to the track here:
