Ahead of the premiere of the documentary ‘The Promise‘, which chronicles the story of the making of his classic fourth studio album ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town‘, Bruce Springsteen has been recounting the record’s genesis with acclaimed actor Ed Norton, reports The Associated Press.
Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival where the new film received it’s premiere on Tuesday night, Springsteen outlined his struggles with maintaining connections with those whom he had grown up with in New Jersey. “I decided that the key to that was maintaining a sense of myself,” he told Norton. “Understanding that a part of my life had been mutated by my success.
There was a thrust of self-preservation more than anything else, more than a political conscience or a social conscience.”
In the film, Springsteen’s band members remember how he had written over 70 songs for the 1978 album, only to ditch those that had been recorded in favour of an entirely new set. “I’d work the band for three days on a piece of music, throw it out,” he recounted. “It was an angry record. I took the 10 toughest songs I had.”
The film was directed by Thom Zimny, who has also made a similar documentary about the making of Springsteen’s landmark 1975 release ‘Born to Run‘.
