Public Image Ltd. leader John Lydon has criticised his former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, saying he ‘didn’t inspire’ and took credit for work which wasn’t his.

In an interview with the UK’s Guardian newspaper, Lydon spoke of his recent family tragedies in addition to his thoughts on McLaren. “Listen mate, I’m still very disturbed by the death of my father a year ago,” he said. “End of story. That’s where my grief is. From what I hear the wake was a terrible mess. Bob Geldof came to see PiL in Canada and he told me. He said he attended the funeral and the wake was full of wannabes, and I bet he was one of them himself! It sounded dreadful: Bernie Rhodes and Vivienne Westwood fighting. A real letdown. Not dignified.”

When asked if he missed McLaren, Lydon replied: “Malcolm McLaren didn’t inspire. He took credit for things he didn’t do. So fuck him. I’m not great at dealing with death, I have to say. I find death very hard: my mum, my dad, Sid Vicious. I’m not a monster; I feel it and it scares me. One death at a time please is all my heart will bear.”

In a seperate interview with the Evening Echo newspaper, Lydon also mocked the Sex Pistols name, dismissing it as ‘twee’. “I know the lot of them were all messing around with names before I went there,” he explained. “To be honest with you, I never even liked the name Sex Pistols. I always felt like it sounded a bit twee. Mind you, if it had been left up to our bassist Glen, we would’ve most probably been called the Milky Bar Kids.”

Public Image Ltd. are currently on tour in the UK and will play London’s Shepherds Bush Empire tonight (19/7).
