Organisers of the Save BBC 6Music campaign, set up to voice opposition over the planned closure of the British digital station, have announced they are to stage a second protest this weekend following a similar event which involved listeners, presenters and musicians last March.

The new protest is again set to include some of the station’s DJs, and Georgina Rodgers, co-founder of the Save BBC 6 Music committee, has said: “With the BBC Trust Consultation closing on the 25th May, this is our last chance to get our message across about how much 6 Music means to its million plus listeners. We have kept up the pressure and action from the moment the proposed closure was announced, and we hope that we have got our message across that 6 Music is a jewel in the crown of the BBC that should not only be saved from the axe, but should be nurtured.”

The plans by BBC Director General Mark Thompson were first announced in February, with 6Music and The Asian Network two of the high profile stations set to be axed as part of a cost cutting exercise. The announcement immediately provoked an angry response from thousands of music fans, with the organised protests beginning on a high-profile Facebook page. Figures released earlier this month showed the station has enjoyed a 50% rise in listenership since the BBC’s decision was made public.
