Review: Mystery Jets – ‘Flash A Hungry Smile’

With the recent demise of indie heroes, Supergrass, the mantel can now be officially passed down to the Mystery Jets, who may have their own take on the art of the ‘indie pop’ song, but fill the Oxford boys shoes quite comfortably, if not from a point of slight inferiority. Tunes laden with hooks, glimmers of quirkiness, and perfect for filling a dancefloor – that’s what they do best at the moment and new single ‘Flash A Hungry Smile‘ ticks all of those boxes.

‘When you walk into the room, those cowboys swoon, you’re the spark that lights the gloom, and my heart sings to your tune,’ croons Blaine Harrison’s echoed vocal on the opening verse to an infectious, cheery whistle, reminding us they’ve not forgotten how to craft a good slice of catchy pop music – the way it should be done, not the way Simon Cowell will have you believe.

The song culminates in a blissful eruption of perfect festival crowd fodder ‘oooos’ and a ‘come back to me, no need to hide’ refrain, then its over quicker than you can say good riddance Fratellis. Perhaps not quite making it into the premier league of some previous efforts, but still a pretty good stab at a chirpy, summery, tune that bodes well for their forthcoming album and will tickle the dancing feet of even the shyest of club goers.
