Review: Cha Cha – ‘We Are Cha-Cha’

With song titles like ‘Phonographic Love‘, ‘Juicy Lucy‘ and ‘Seventies Casualty’, it can only mean fun, fun, fun for ChaCha’s debut album ‘We Are Cha-Cha‘. London based and signed to brand new label ‘Pop Noodle Records’, I listen to this album in anticipation, as I could not get their single, ‘The Fellowship‘, out of my head for weeks! So full album proper, what have the boys got to offer?

Phonographic Love‘ opens the album and I already hear influences of Razorlight and Vampire Weekend. Funky, playful guitar and with high pitched sounding vocals. It’s the instant dance-able sound that some bands struggle with, but ChaCha manage to pull it off brilliantly. So they then follow up with the seriously catchy ‘The Fellowship‘. It was the first song I heard from them as it was available as a free download. It’s like a modern day ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’, but don’t take that as an insult. Calypso like drums infused with fun sounding keyboards and again that indie-dance guitar. It’s a bop along theme that seriously won’t leave your head anytime soon.

As you go on you have a little acoustic ditty in the shape of ‘Let You Down’, which is a nice little break in between the album. ‘Seventies Casualty‘ has that simple but yet effective pop hook-tastic melody.  Finally we have some bass kick in and it appears on ‘Juicy Lucy’. Hands up in the air, feet stomping and cow bells at the bloody ready. Not sure what they mean by the lyrics ‘I want to be a boy!’ as far as I know they are all boys. But silly lines aside, it’s a dance floor filler that does not shy away from being cheeky goodness. ‘Flashlight‘ shows a more gentle side to ChaCha, an ode to young love if you will. Warm and heartfelt, which amazingly does not seem out of place. ‘Windows‘ closes this tasty little pop gem, just a shame it doesn’t end on a high, as it does seem to just chug along with an uninspired afrobeat sound.

One thing you have to give ChaCha credit for is the knack to write some seriously catchy numbers. With their skills honed and the pop-o-meter turned to stun, you can’t help but be taken in by their witty playful beats. Frivolous and unadulterated fun sums up ‘We Are Cha-Cha’, so get on your dancing shoes and I promise you, you won’t want to stop!

Album is out on the 10th May via http://ilovepopnoodle.com and you can download ‘The Fellowship’ here http://ilovepopnoodle.com/?p=235 Enjoy!
