Organisers of last weekend’s UK Record Store Day have hailed the project as a success after figures showed sales of vinyl rocketed over the weekend.

The event was held at various independent record shops across the UK, and featured many exclusive releases from a host of bands in a bid to encourage music fans to buy their music from local shops. Amongst those releasing material were The Beatles, who’s 1966 single ‘Paperback Writer‘ was re-issued, The Rolling Stones, who released a forgotten track from the sessions which resulted in their 1972 landmark album ‘Exile On Main St.‘, and Blur, who issued ‘Fool’s Day’, their first new material since 2003.

Spencer Hickman, manager of London’s Rough Trade East store told NME.COM the day had been a big hit amongst music lovers: “It was a total success,” he said. “Some of the stores are already telling me that they doubled last year’s total. Some stores say it has been there best ever day of trading too. There were queues round the block before we opened. There was a fantastic atmosphere and it was just generally pretty crazy – it went so well.”

Early figures suggest sales were up 460% from the previous week, and were up 96% on the sales generated by last year’s event.
