The headliners for this year’s Reading/Leeds Festival have been announced this evening, while the strongly rumoured reunion of The Libertines has also been rubber-stamped.

The highlight of the weekend looks like being the Friday in Leeds and the Saturday in Reading when Arcade Fire will headline a bill that also includes the aforementioned Libertines, The Cribs, Dizzee Rascal and Modest Mouse.

Arcade Fire’s Will Butler told the NME the band plan to premiere new material from their hotly-anticipated third album at the festival: “We’re really looking forward to playing the new songs live,” he said, and added that he feels “like an inventor emerging from his basement after a year’s work.”

The other headline acts will be US legends Guns n Roses, who will be joined by Queens Of The Stone Age and Biffy Clyro amongst others, and Blink 182, who headline a bill which also features Weezer.

It is the reformation of The Libertines which is set to generate the most headlines from the announcement, and Carl Barat has told NME.com that they have returned for the fans: “We’re reforming the band to play the songs that people want to hear. We’re going to get together, play songs which have been collecting dust in the garage. People want to hear them, so we’re going to give them a run. We’ll be playing them like we’re playing them for the last ever time.”

Meanwhile, Pete Doherty, who has made no secret of his desire to reform The Libertines over the past few years, added: “I can’t really believe it yet. I haven’t quite digested it. It’s been a bit of a pipe dream.”

The twin events will take place over the last weekend of August. More acts are set to be announced shortly.
