On the eve of the release of her second record ‘I Speak Because I Can‘, Hampshire-based singer-songwriter Laura Marling has told BBC 6Music she is close to finishing work on the follow-up: “We’re doing pre-production at the moment,” she told the station. “It’s taking a form now – I don’t really know which one.”

The 20 year old singer, who released her acclaimed, Mercury-nominated debut album ‘Alas I Cannot Swim‘ in 2008, also discussed the new approach she took to recording her second LP: “We wanted it to feel like a band album and to do it in an organic way, so we all recorded in the same room, standing next to each other. It was really fun. Whatever I write tends to be something that’s floating around my head, so last year I became quite fascinated by women and femininity. So it comes out.”

Laura also revealed where she took inspiration for her lyrics, which were partly borne out of reading wartime love letters: “The content of them was so bizarre, a wife writing to her husband describing how she was made ‘wooden’ by anger that he was leaving. I thought it was such a beautiful way of putting something, being wooden by insecurity or fear or anger.”

The new record, which was produced by Kings Of Leon cohort Ethan Johns, is released tomorrow.
