The Patio Set caught the attention of our writer Peter at ‘Adults night’ at The Macbeth the other night. Read on to see if the quartet left behind a good impression :
Michael, Gareth, Sean & James make up The Patio Set and this band of awkward noiseniks made me salivate from my ears. They’re brought together by their love of all things slightly angular and their shared joy of making an intelligent racket. With their frenetic guitar work and pummeling drum sounds, these guys do not shy away from challenging the norm to an ear-bashing, and they are always triumphant too. Describing their sound is tough, try to imagine Fugazi having a threesome with The Foals and Talking Heads. It’s mind-bending and frustrating at times, but what may seem like a heart-wrenching display, is in fact an example of something quite brilliant. Lead singer, Gareth also demonstrates the more emotional and harrowing side to The Patio Set, as at times, the lyric’s dark undertones seemingly guide their constantly growing sound into another dimension.
With the release of their new EP on the 18th February, the band are due to stage a very special launch night for it. It’s a collaboration with artist Jack Killick and is limited to only 250 copies. The four track EP all have different covers and all make up five different pieces of artwork by the artist. For one night only (02/18), the vinyl pressings are going on display and you will be able to see these very special works of art. That EP is entitled ‘The Birches & Bells EP’ and I enjoyed the opportunity to listen to a pre-release copy.
Over the four tracks it really is an eye opening piece of work. The Patio Set show an immense and driven creative force that, not only demonstrate originality, but have a way of making their music fearless. Its tracks ‘Mines & Prospects’ and ‘Bells’ challenge anything that you may have heard previously. It’s a disturbing yet glorious set of songs that deserve your undivided attention from start to finish.
Currently the band have an EP already available which you can download here http://thepatioset.bandcamp.com/ and their new EP ‘The Birches & Bells EP’ will also be available from the 18th February.
