The BBC’s annualSound Of’ countdown, which lists the music industry’s hottest tips for the new year, has begun today with New York based band The Drums the first act to be mentioned.

The list, which consists of 5 acts in total, is drawn up by 165 leading British insiders, who named their favourite three new acts. One act from the top five will be announced in reverse order during the course of this week, with the overall winner announced on Friday.

The Drums were formed in Brooklyn out of the ashes of previous band Elkland by Jonathan Pierce (vox), Jacob Graham (guitar), Adam Kessler (guitar) and Connor Hanwick, (drums). The band released their debut EP ‘Summertime’ on the Moshi Moshi label and have also released two 7″ singles ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ and ‘I Felt Stupid‘. Speaking to the BBC about their songwriting, Pierce said: “We only write about two feelings – one is the first day of summer when you and all of your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. The other is when you’re walking alone in the rain and realise you will be alone forever.”

Little Boots topped the BBC’s list, which also featured new female acts such as Florence & the Machine and La Roux, last year, while other previous winners have included singer/songwriters Adele, Mika and Corinne Bailey Rae.
