Indie Music in Crisis?

Indie Rock Music Bands

Indie music takes a back seat to more popular genres.

If the charts are the authorities of who’s hot and who’s not, it would seem that Indie lost out to dance in the music world’s popularity contest last year.

According to sales bible, ‘UK Official Chart Company’, just two British indie guitar bands appear in the top 20 selling records of 2009. On the other hand, dance and electronic-driven music are becoming the dominant styles claims Martin Talbot, the group’s managing director.

This trend experienced by Indie music could also be a good thing , it could be argued. Jim Chancellor from Fiction Records (Polydor) explained to BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat that this is not necessarily a bad thing.

“It’s right that there’s a break, it’s good that there’s a break. People realise that they can’t just copy something else, they have to reinvent that,” he said.

Mr Chancellor also claimed that pop music “comes and goes”, while guitar-based bands that become popular tend to endure.

he added that the current economic climate could have led to labels concentrating on pop, as they see the genre as a safer investment.

In other news this week, Tom Clarke, frontman of indie favourites The Enemy, told the BBC that the band plans to take a short break from touring and recording and one of America’s biggest rock bands, the Killers, just announced a long hiatus from music and cancelled their Asia tour.
