Julien Temple, the British film director who’s credits include documentaries on the Sex Pistols, Joe Strummer and the Glastonbury festival, is planning a new rockumentary focusing on the legendary 60s group The Kinks.
Entitled ‘You’ve Really Got Me‘, the film will centre around the fractuous relationship between brothers Ray and Dave Davies, and will also focus on the influence of British Music Hall on the band’s songwriting.
Temple, who has previously directed music videos for The Kinks on hits such as ‘Come Dancing‘, outlined his plans for the feature to ScreenDaily: “At the heart of it is the extraordinary love-hate relationship between these two brothers: love/hate, sibling rivalry is at the core. I think it’s a very rich social, cultural nexus around The Kinks. Their story is the untold story of all those big bands of the 1960s.”
Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Ray and Dave Davies were famous for their inter-band fighting, and had a series of fall-outs before their split in 1996. The brothers rarely spoke after The Kinks ended, but enjoyed a reconciliation following Dave Davies’ stroke in 2004.
In keeping with the tradition of recent big-budget biopics such as ‘Ray’ and ‘Walk The Line‘, Temple said he requires the as yet un-cast actors to be able to play The Kinks music live: “I think you would want to have the music played by the actors,” he said. “That is believable and real while miming is problematic.”
As well as ‘You’ve Really Got Me’, Temple has a number of other projects ready to be launched over the coming months. In February ‘Oil City Confidential’ will be launched in the UK with a special ‘live’ cinema screening. The first showing will be accompanied by a concert beamed live from London. Temple also has a new documentary chronicling the economic decline of Detriot called ‘Requiem For Detroit‘, which will premiere on the BBC in January.
Julien Temple (Sex Pistols: The Filth and The Fury, Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten) fields questions after a screening of his new film, which tells the story of British R&B pub band, Dr. Feelgood.
