Review: Ian Brown – ‘Just Like You’

Remember when you were a child and your parents took you to the toy shop? you wanted to have everything in it and choosing something was impossible because all around you were toys screaming out ‘choose me!’. Such is the predicament in picking singles off Ian Brown‘s current album ‘My Way‘ which is back to back quality, nearly every track worthy of single status, a statement of intent he set out when writing the album of which he fulfilled with glorious results, and this gem is no exception.

It’s hard to digest the fact that this track was written by a man in his mid 40’s, as it makes his younger contemporaries sound as dull as dish water in comparison. Just Like You is classic Ian Brown treading in familiar territory, yet with a fresh approach. It’s a synth-laden foot stomper bleeding with attitude and swagger. The contrast between the stomping verses and the unexpected dreamy chorus works a charm. This is without doubt worthy of a spot on the inevitable second greatest hits album, he’s certainly not short of songs to justify putting out another one. Just Like You will go down as another triumph in his impressive back catalogue of solo work that shows no signs of burning out. King Monkey has still got it.
