Our weekly round-up of highlights includes new albums from Editors and The Flaming Lips, a few appearances from New Order legend Bernard Sumner, and another eclectic line-up on Later… with Jools Holland.

Albums

Editors return this week with their third studio album ‘In This Light and On This Evening’. Their first since 2007’s ‘An End Has a Start‘, the album has received generally positive reviews from critics, with one calling it a ‘a career peak for the band’.

Also returning this week are American veterans The Flaming Lips – ‘Embryonic‘, the band’s first double album, is out on Monday, elsewhere Liverpool-based Echo & The Bunnymen release their eleventh studio album ‘The Fountain‘.

Gigs

Bloc Party continue their ‘Bloctober’ tour this week with dates in Lincoln, Stoke, Birmingham, Newport and Llandudno.

Editors play Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds and Norwich during the week as part of their size-able UK tour in support of their new album and The Big Pink hit Wrexham on Monday before moving on to the Middlesbrough Cornerhouse (Fri), York Duchess (Sat) and Leeds Cockpit (Sun).

Television

Recently reformed ‘post-punk’ band Magazine join Jools Holland this week (Tue, 10pm) along with Wolfmother and American singer/songwriter Seasick Steve. The extended edition follows as usual on Friday at 11.35pm.

The video premiere for ‘Cornerstone‘, the second single from Arctic Monkeys‘ new album ‘Humbug‘, is aired on Channel 4 (Thu, 11.55pm).

BBC4 airs ‘Synth Britannia‘, a documentary chronicling the impact of the synthesizer on 80s music, with contributions from the likes of Bernard Sumner and Gary Numan, on Friday at 9pm.

Radio

Bernard Sumner joins Cerys Matthews on her BBC6 Music afternoon show (Tue, 1pm), to discuss his new project Bad Lieutenant, who are also appearing with Dermot O’Leary on BBC Radio 2 (Sat, 3pm).

Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro are live at Maida Vale studios for Zane Lowe’s show (BBC R1, Tue 7pm).

The Hot Rats, aka Supergrass members Gaz Coombes and Dan Goffey, are live in session on Radcliffe & Maconie’s BBC Radio 2 show from 8pm on Wednesday
