The Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It” , which is released by Sony, raked in an amazing $7.4 million in estimated first-day box office on Wednesday.

Industry forecasts project the music documentary to take in more than $40 million through Sunday.

The movies two week theatrical run was a campaign Sony’s marketers used to launch the film in 97 foreign markets . The limited theatrical release seems to be evoking the early must-see interest in the film although solid critics’ reviews and positive audience feedback could change that.

Rival studios were the first to estimate the pic’s first-day box office. Sony is expected to release its own number sometime Thursday.

“This is It” easily led the box office rankings in front of Paramount’s supernatural thriller “Paranormal Activity”

The film contains rehearsals footage, interviews and back-stage scenes from preparations for what would have been the late singer’s 50-show concert extravaganza in London. AEG Entertainment put “High School Musical” helemer Kenny Ortega incharge of directing the documentary

Sony acquired worldwide distribution rights for a reported $60 million.
