Damon Albarn has invited Southend-based rockers The Horrors to contribute to the forthcoming Gorillaz album after he heard their ‘exciting’ new album.

Speaking on BBC’s 6Music, the band’s bassist Rhys Webb said: “He got a copy really early, contacted us completely out of the blue and told us how much he liked it. We went down to the studio and he said, ‘We’re working on the new album and we’ve not collaborated with a guitar band before. Your album is one of the most exciting things I’ve heard in a long time. Would you be up for working on a track?'”

Albarn has begun finishing work on the Gorillaz third album after completing a series of hugely successful comeback gigs with Blur. In January 2009, Albarn debuted three new Gorillaz tracks during a stint as a guest DJ on BBC Radio 1. The songs were ‘Electric Shock‘, ‘Broken’ and ‘Stylo‘. In addition to The Horrors, De La Soul member Posdnous told Entertainment Weekly that his group had provided vocals for two songs set to feature on the album.

Webb went on to describe the progress being made in the studio by Albarn: “he played us a lot of tracks he’d been working. They were in a really similar place to where we were at the moment.”

The Horrors’ second album, ‘Primary Colours’, which marked a change in direction for the band, has been nominated for this year’s Mercury Music Prize.
