Tom Clarke has revealed his band The Enemy are interested in writing England’s official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The band have made no secret of their love for football since bursting onto the music scene a few years ago, and have played at their beloved Coventry City’s home ground The Ricoh Arena on two occasions – once headlining and once supporting Oasis.

Speaking in today’s The Sun newspaper, Clarke said: “I’d like to get Peter Crouch to rap. We’d let him do his robot dance too. I reckon Wayne Rooney could be an angry rapper. We’d do it just so we could say, ‘We’ve recorded the official England song’. If we brought out a good song England might win it.”

The traditional song has seen varied success over the years, with New Order perhaps penning the greatest England song when they wrote ‘World In Motion’ for England’s 1990 World Cup bid, which famously featured former Liverpool and England star John Barnes rapping a section of the song. The track remains the only New Order single to reach the top of the UK Charts.

The Lightning Seeds also re-released their track ‘Three Lions‘, penned with comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, for the 1998 World Cup, after the song was originally the offical choice for the 1996 European Championships. The Lightning Seeds also featured on England’s official song that year, when they appeared alongside members of Echo & The Bunnymen and The Spice Girls on the track ‘(How Does It Feel To Be) On Top Of The World?‘.

The most recent effort was by Yorkshire band Embrace, who’s track ‘World At Their Feet’ reached #3 in the Singles chart during England’s 2006 World Cup campaign.
