Former Space drummer Andy Parle has died suddenly aged 42, after collapsing in Liverpool on Saturday night.

According to the Liverpool Echo newspaper, passers-by tried to revive him before paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at Liverpool Royal Infirmary. A police spokeswoman said the death was ‘unexplained’, adding: “Officers investigating the death are keen to speak with anyone who may have been in the area around this time and particularly any taxi drivers using this busy route to come forward. A post mortem will be held to establish the cause of death.”

Former Space bassist Dave Palmer was quick to pay tribute to his bandmate, saying: “I think with Space he’d had enough commercial success. Space continued to have success after Andy left but the band changed and lost something which Andy had contributed. Even though we had another brilliant drummer there was something about Andy’s style which was unique.” He also described Parle as a ‘brilliant drummer’.

Space were formed in Liverpool in 1993, and found fame in the UK at the height of the Britpop scene, with their biggest hit being ‘Female Of The Species‘ which reached the UK Top 20 in 1996. They released three albums during their career, before splitting in 2005.
